When I decided to start Folk and Flora, I knew I wanted it to be sustainable. Print on Demand (POD) means no waste - everything is printed as it's ordered.<\/p>
Sustainability is about knowing who made my products, where and how. What happens to them when they're worn out. That's traceability, and it's one of the reasons I work together with Teemill to manufacture my products. It's not just that the supply chain is certified as organic, it means it's grown and processed in the way nature intended, which is better for the local environment. It's things like the dye house having a closed loop water supply so there are no factories pouring pollutants into rivers. The water is cleaner when it comes out than when it goes in. It's the packaging that it gets sent to you in being completely plastic free and reusable. It means being made by humans, not being replaced by automated robots. It means the very occasional misprint or defect is not thrown in the bin - if it doesn't meet standard, it's given a new life as part of the closed loop system where worn out or defective products are recovered so the materials can be remade again and again. There's even solar panels on the roof of the factories so they're powered by renewable energy!
Teemill also uses GOTS-certified and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 water based inks. These non-toxic, eco-friendly inks contain zero harmful chemicals, are completely vegan, and conform to the strict Soil Association organic criteria.
